happy 26th
Posted on: April 7, 2010
so on my 26th birthday i was away at a camp with some super awesome people. the day before my birthday was my friend kerri-ann’s birthday, and the day of my birthday was easter, so i just assumed people would be so focused on those two things that they would forget my birthday, which was great cos i wanted to skip my birthday cos of the whole feeling old thing.
as i got out of my tent on the easter morning, i was greeted by a chorus of happy birthday, and i thought oh well there goes my secret. it turned out to be a super awesome day so i’m glad my friends didn’t let me not celebrate it. turns out once the initial shock of being over 25 wears off, 26 isn’t so bad afterall.
we started off the day by eating lots of easter eggs. then we had an easter service right there at the camp site. some other campers heard us worshipping and came and joined us which was awesome. they then brought us some milo and condensed milk which sealed the new friendship. so for breakfast we had condensed milk covered…well, everything – from bananas to rolls to easter eggs…yea, like those aren’t sweet enough already. we had so much sugar in us that people got tired of the sugar and started a chocolate fight – as in throwing pieces of chocolate at each other.
while on that sugar high we decided to join our new friends in some rock climbing. i didn’t climb myself but i watched others do it and cheered from the sidelines. after we decided we had had enough of the climbing, or maybe it was when the sugar rush started fading, we went back to camp and had lunch – more condensed milk covered everything anyone? yes please.
with our sugar levels back up, we went and played an awesome game of soccer. from what i can remember i scored at least 5 goals. yay me! then while the boys played cricket, the girls went off to wimpy’s and had coffee and waffles with ice cream and chocolate sauce…yay more sugar. by the time we got back to the camp site that evening i had decided that i never want to see sugar again. we promptly decided that we were NOT going to have cake that night. we had a nice dinner of scrambled eggs and bacon (i forgot for a few minutes that i’m doing the vegetarian thing for the month of april), then built a bonfire and sat and chatted until all the sugar had been drained out of us and then we all shuffled/crawled back to our tents and passed out.
it was truly a high five-able day. and i’m so thankful to God for awesome friends i could share the day with.
oh, and if you ever go to camp in Montagu, Western Cape, do stop by a restaurant called “De Oude Kombuis”, and say hi to my new favorite waitress Janet.
