I was away at a VisionK camp this weekend which was good in some ways, not so good in others, and exhausting in every way imaginable…but I know it’s going to be good in the long run so…Anyway, I wasn’t at the morning service today.

Hallelujah (your love makes me sing) (Brian Doerkson/Brenton Brown)
I could sing of your love forever (Martin Smith)
You alone can rescue (Matt Redman)
You won’t relent (Misty Edwards)
Revelation Song (Kari Jobe)
Ronel was leading today, with Kevin and Abi both choosing and leading a couple of songs each. There was hectic issues with the sound and the technical equipment and people not at practice and practice actually running over time and everything just not gelling before the service, which made everyone just frustrated and I was still super tired from camp, so attitudes were also not good…and we were all just wrecked. I don’t think we’ve ever prayed that much as the worship team before a service. And God showed up, and things just clicked…and mostly importantly worship happened…after the service we had another prayer session as the worship team just to say thanks cos really it was all Him! Wow, He’s AWESOME!
For the next six weeks we will be going through the six pillars – or main values – enGAGE stands on. Today was the first one – “Faithful followers of Jesus”.
The preach was Matthew 7: 13 – 29 and we looked at the question “What does it really mean to be a follower of Christ?”
from vs. 13 – 15 -> the gate is small (Jesus is the gate, and sometimes he’s not easily findable, you have to actively seek him) and the way narrow (following is a lifestyle choice, it’s not just about praying the sinners prayer…you have to live out your life on the narrow road, keeping guard of your path). If you are not actively swimming upstream, you are going with the flow – downstream.
from vs. 16 – 20 -> you shouldn’t always have to tell people you are Christian. they should see it in the way you live (always preach the gospel, when necessary use words – st Francis of Assisi). The consequence of being a bad tree is getting chopped down and burnt!
from vs. 21 – 23 -> You can’t fool God cos He knows your heart (motives). Yes, you are doing “good” things, but are you doing His will? (Obedience). “You are doing stuff in my name, but you don’t know me…in fact, I don’t know you…you are not one of mine.”
from vs. 24 – 27 -> foundation is created by hearing AND doing. Faith AND Deeds. Works alone can’t save you, but in faith, your works display His work in you. Storms will come, where you stand – where you hope and faith lies – will determine the outcome on the other side.
Matthew 23: 1 – 32 -> a follower should be:
Authentic: do as you say, don’t be a hypocrite
Consistent: Jesus was Jesus no matter where he was or who he was around
Humility: living for an audience of one, don’t do good works to look good before others
Intentionality: people can spot falsenes
Lastly, He wants it all or nothing at all. “following Jesus doesn’t cost much, just everything.” – Keith Green

You alone can rescue (Matt Redman)
How great is our God (Chris Tomlin)
*Preach*
Lord, let your glory fall (Matt Redman)
Lord you are worthy (Brad Klynsmith) – so loving this song right now
God is great (Marty Sampson)
Sing to the king (Billy Foote)
Kevin was leading today, but Ronel and Abi both chose and led a couple of songs each.
Today’s preach was entitled “An Extreme God Worthy of Extreme Worship”. We sang the first 2 songs, then Brett did the preach, then we had a praise party after that.
The preach was about how God did the extreme (created Earth, wanted to wipe it out, came to Earth as a human, etc) and demands the extreme (told Abraham to kill his only son, sell all your possessions and give them to the poor, etc), but is worthy of extreme praise for what he’s done (while we were sinners Christ died for us, Father forgive them for they know not what they do, He did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, etc).
Verses used: Genesis 1: 1; Genesis 2: 15 – 23; Genesis 3: 21; Genesis 6: 5 – 7; Genesis 9: 12 – 17; Genesis 22: 1 -2, 9 – 18; Philippians 2: 5 – 8; Romans 5: 6 – 8; Mark 10: 21; Luke 23: 34

Morning service I went to youth and, it being the first service of the year, we just introduced new people and tried to get the admin – times for cell, contact numbers, etc – done. so no lesson or anything this week…just chatting and sharing about our holidays mostly.
Evening

We cry out (Brian Johnson)
All of my days (Hillsong)
Be lifted up (Paul Oakley)
My life is in You (Daniel Gardner)
Give thanks (Henry Smith)
Forever(Chris Tomlin)
How deep the Father’s love (Stuart Townend)
Ronel led worship today. Was pretty good I think…I really enjoyed singing today. The preach was on hidden sin and how it affects those in community with you looking at Aiken from the book of Joshua . His sin caused the whole of the Israelites shame, and it caused death, and caused the disgrace of God in the eyes of the other nations. Brett went on to challenge us to start off the year with clean slates by repenting of our secret sins and renewing our minds, lest those sins have negative effects on the enGAGE community.
Must say, I’m excited about enGAGE in 2010.

Come now is the time to worship (Brian Doerkson)
Alles vir my (Afrikaans) (Retief Burger)
Dula le rona (Sotho) (Paul Mpete)
Desert song (Brooke Fraser)
Give us clean hands (Chris Tomlin)
All who are thirsty (Brenton Brown/Glenn Robertson)
How deep the father’s love for us (Stuart Townend)
Firstly let me start by saying how much I love the fact that I live in a country with 11 official language…and how much I love going to a church that realises that and attempts to worship in different languages!
Ronel led worship this morning – was cool having the evening guys leading in the morning service…well, i thought it was cool. Morning service crowd has quite a different vibe from the evening service crowd so it’s very cool for me whenever we do stuff in the morning or when the morning service people visit the evening service.
Speaking of different people doing stuff together, Chris (the pastor) spoke on the church of Acts (chapter 2) in his series of church being community. He talked on unity in diversity…so basically people who are different coming together as one. The term used in the old testament for the trinity is also the term used in the whole the man shall leave his mother and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one…how cool is that. As the church that is the picture we are supposed to present…different people from different backrounds/ethinicities/tribes/tongues/etc coming together to praise and worship him in our togetherness…living together, sharing together, praying together, showing the world real unity/peace/love…
The vineyard church is very big on the theme of “everyone gets to play”…basically, we have pastors and leaders and etc but everyone is gifted in some way and everyone has a role to play in the church…the pastor has his part and each congregant has their part…if one person doesn’t do his part, we all hurt as the church.
Chris also touched on the church of acts vs the church in Paul’s letters. He talked about how the church in Acts was how it was the intended model (Acts 2: 42ff) and the church in Paul’s letters was the remedial model…the one that God allows because we live in a falled world and get things wrong and etc…and there’s a place for both…but sometimes we get so comfortable and dependent on the remedy that we can’t get back to normal…let’s leave the remedy and get back to health…to realising that church is not the building…we are the church…we are all part of the priesthood…we all have a part to play.
Evening
========
For the evening service we had planned to go to the beach and have a jam sesion picnic there but the wind forced us to change our plans. We ended up going to play bingo at a local pub/bar/place and then after that we went to Brett and Val’s place and had game night with crumpets…and lots and lots of laughs…
Love my church family!
On Saturday there was a 12 hour interdenominational worship event happening. I had initially planned to go for the whole 12 hours but then instead i decided to go to a fun day in the park thing we had for the kids from the vineyard house to give the housemothers a bit of a breather. Anyway, our worship team was supposed to lead the 4 – 5 pm slot so we decided we would go around 2pm’ish. After 2 hours of playing with the kids under the super hot sun I was wiped…and smelled funny. And I ended up getting back home later than i thought i would…but then other people were also running late so I got to take a quick shower then sat and waited…and the more I sat the more I realised how tired i was and how i was totally not amped to sing…until finally the group came to pick me up. Next up we had to stop for food cos we hadn’t eaten. And so instead of getting there by 2:45 like we had planned we ended up arriving at like 3:45…and we were supposed to lead at 4. But I was tired and not amped…and I found out later that Ronel who was doing the leading was not feeling amped just cos she was angry about us being all late and not organised and stuff…so we get there, not really in worship mode or whatever…and God decided to shake up our plans. We ended up not going up at 4. Someone went up to lead and we ended up having like an hour and a half of free/prophetic worship…such cool vibes…and I was so grateful cos as I was worshipping I was totally renewed and the tiredness left and it was all about worshipping the only one worthy of it. And Ronel said the same happened to her…while worshipping her anger was calmed and God prepared her for leading worship…we ended up going up at 6:30 pm…and I thought we were really bad…there was no monitor so we couldn’t hear each other and i sounded all false on most songs…but before i went up I just asked God to make his name glorified no matter what – whether we did well or not – and afterwards one of the guys from our church came up and told me how heavenly the worship was…and how he was blessed by it…and i was thankful, cos that’s all that matters – not that we sound good, but that we lead others to worship…
After us another group went up and there was another 2 hours of free/prophetic worship and lots of visions and it was such beautiful God-moment after God-moment…was truly blessed.
Sunday morning we had a guest preacher: John Scott from Scotland (ha ha…). Anyway, he talked about dreaming big, and committing your dreams to the Lord, and walking towards those dreams. One thing he said that I really liked was that we should dream big…impossible big, because if our dreams are small then why would we need God at all…After that we had ministry time and prayed for healing for people and stuff…and I actually got to see a leg grow. Yea, I know…I used to think the same…and believe me even while I was seeing it I was still being all skeptical, and had it been people I didn’t know, I wouldn’t have believed it…but I actually saw it myself and heard testimonies of people who had been healed from back/neck pains that they had had for 15 – 20 years…was beyond…i don’t know…God is seriously awesome!
In the evening we visited a Nigerian/Gabonese church…was super cool. Culture shock in some ways – they did things a bit different from us…but then pretty much every church is different from enGAGE – but yea, they were the friendliest group of people you’ll ever meet. So. Much. Handshaking…and someone mentioning that they’d seen my pictures on facebook…kinda scary in a way – just how much of me there is on the internet, which is a total public space. Anyway…surprisingly, the preach in the evening was also about dreams…which was pretty cool, so I guess God is really trying to get a message through to us. Also, the guy was talking about Joseph and how Joseph had all these dreams and stuff and yet it took so long for them to be fulfilled (had to stay in the prison for at least 2 years after the cupbearer got re-instated cos the cupbearer forgot about him), but God had not forgotten him. God is faithful. He always remembers His promises.
All in all, a super blessed weekend.

November already, wow!
This weekend I was away at Vision K camp so didn’t go to morning service…still tired from that camp but was much fun and totally enjoyed it and will probably do a post on it next week…

Everything (Tim Hughes)
From the inside out (Hillsong)
Fire fall down (Hillsong)
Enter this temple (Leeland)
Adoration (Brenton Brown)
Facedown (Matt Redman)
O come let us adore him (Frederick Oakley)
Ronel led worship, and unlike last week where the musicians were on point and everyone enjoyed the worship as well as the musical aspect of it, musically it definitely was not our best night…but worship happened, and that’s what it’s all about right?
Anyway, preach-wise, there wasn’t really a preach as such…we broke up into groups and looked at some passages and had discussions on giving: how does God give, how do we give, how should we give? Then we had report backs from each group and it was really cool…
next week promises to be very exciting worship team wise, but we’ll see…(keep you in suspence for a bit).

Days of Elijah (Robin Mark)
O praise him (David Crowder Band)
Adoration (Brenton Brown)
Beautiful (Phil Wickham)
Brett was not around in the morning so he asked one of the fathers of the youth to do the lesson today and he spoke on Ephesians 4: 15, 26 – Speak the truth in love and do not go to bed angry…basically, anger is not a sin, but you need to watch your reaction to that anger cos that can lead you into sin.

Hallelujah (your love makes me sing) (Brian Doerkson/Brenton Brown)
I could sing of your love forever (Martin Smith)
Heart of worship (Matt Redman)
Eagle’s wings (Reuben Morgan)
Indescribable (Chris Tomlin)
Lord of lords (Brooke Fraser)
Ronel lead tonight, and it went really well I think. First time for me being back on worship in a month…from singing every weekend to taking a month off…anyway, was a good break…
The message tonight was entitled “live connected, live well”. If we stay connected to the vine by hearing/reading the word and putting it into practice, then we shall have abundant life. We cant produce the fruit on our own – our task is to remain in the vine, and as we remain in him, he will produce the fruit in our lives.

I had a pretty hectic but good week last week so decided to spend Sunday morning at home by my lonesome to do some recovering…and by the end of the day was feeling very refreshed thanks in part to David Crowder Band…

Lord of lords (brooke fraser)
Desert song (brooke fraser)
Healer (Mike Guglielmucci)
Let your glory fall – chorus only (Matt Redman)
Ronel led tonight with Madeleine co-leading on vocals.
Tonight was a continuation of 2 weeks ago: Porn Again part 2. After the singing we broke into two groups, the guys group and the girls group…we sat around in a circle and first we went around saying things that the church doesn’t address that we feel they should – basically what are things that are never talked about in church that you think should be talked about. After that people started shared their stories…wow…it was hectic…I thought – especially for first time visitors – it would be weird, but people were eager to share stuff and they just opened up and they were loved on and prayed for and it was just so good. then after that we broke up into even smaller groups (like 3 or 4 in each group) and just prayed for each other.
Was truly an awesome service. God was present and God worked.
I’ve been on a break from the worship team for the last 4 weeks, felt like I needed to take time out to sort out some stuff and talk to God for a bit, and now I’m feeling all better and thinking I might return to the worship team. Anyway, hoping the stuff that needed resolving is resolved but if you would like to offer up some prayers on my behalf I would really appreciate it.

! And they both went very well, even though it was just me and her on vocals…scary…but God showed up and…it just worked, I think.

God of wonders (Chris Tomlin)
adoration (Brenton Brown)
The thing I love most about the morning congregation is that they are so responsive…like they sing loudly and clap and dance and they get into the worship you know…when I’m up there and the congregation is just looking straight ahead looking bored…I lose heart, if you know what I mean. But yea, the morning peeps really get into the praise and worship and so it’s fun singing in the morning service.
I went to a young women’s conference on Saturday and it was so awesome! Unfortunately I missed a lot of it but apparently the beautiful Val (Brett’s wife) lead a workshop in the morning and Brett used that for the youth on Sunday morning…anyway, it was all about how we shouldn’t be comparing ourselves with others…God made you the individual that you are, with the characteristics that you have, and you are a child of The King…only He can say who you are. Awesomely awesome!
More on that in a post to come later.

Chris the pastor did the preach this Sunday. (We call him Chris the pastor because well, he is the pastor – the head pastor – of VCFS, and there are 2 other Chris’ in the church – Chris the sound guy and Chris the Andrea’s boyfriend)
Anyway, the preach was on praying for others…basically, VCF has this thing that they say “everyone gets to play”…and what that means is that they don’t consider it the pastor’s job to do the ministering to others, we are all family and we should all be praying for each other – confess to one another, carry each other’s burdens, etc – but a lot of people (including me) sometimes get scared to pray for others cos you don’t know how or what to pray or whatever…so that was what the preach was about…and well here’s how in 3 short steps…
1. Ask what to pray for
2. Pray
3. Let God reveal stuff to you, check in with the person on their response or ask them if your “revelation” means anything to them…pray on that…rinse and repeat.
Afterwards we had ministry time and everyone in the congregation was either being prayed for or praying for someone…was super awesome…seriously!
Namibialand – the momories
Posted on: July 1, 2008
Intro
Our trip started on Friday, June 13th, 2008 at 2am – that’s when we left Stellenbosch. I remember driving past Mulmesberry and thinking “it’s weird how quiet everything gets and how life seems to stop at night” and looking up at the stars and realizing its been a while since I’ve seen stars. Then the next town I remember seeing was Springbok – an hour away from the South African/Namibian border. Not the best of sleeps but better than nothing.
On the trip back, the opposite happened. We left at around 7:30pm and I was thinking “well, at least this time I’ll get to see more of the trip”. The next thing I remember we were at the border and it was my turn to go in the back of the bakkie to go get some sleep. I love travel induced sleep. I arrived back home at 4:30 am and was in my bed and off to la-la-land by 4:45.
Part 1 – Namrock
The first part of the trip was a camp from the 13th to the 16th. There were about 90 people from all around South Africa and it was held on a farm just outside the town of Karasburg – and by just outside I mean about 100 km of dirt road. Camping, tents, long-drop toilets, no cell phone reception…not my idea of fun, I much prefer “camps” with chalets and indoor plumbing and hot water. But I must say, the beauty of that place made up for it all. Waking up in the mornings and watching the sunrise come up and light up the desert. Falling asleep under a multitude of stars that you would never get to see in Stellenbosch. Waking up to the sound of birds in the morning instead of cars screeching past. Watching a guy fall 3 meters down a mountain then get up and walk the rest of the way back down…another story for another day. I love technology as much as the next guy, but sometimes its good to just get away from it all – cell phones, facebook, tv, etc. And the bonus was we got to eat fresh Kudu meat as the owner of the farm decided to go and hunt a kudu for us.
Part 2 – Namibia
The second part of the trip was in Keetmanshoop (from the 16th to the 19th). 6 of us (Ronel, Kevin, Brett, Vania, Gareth, and I) stayed in Namibia at the end of the camp while everyone else went back home. At this point I was starting to regret that decision. I missed my bed and hot showers and fast food. We were going to do a mission type thing with the vineyard church there and the only thing our fearless leader knew was that we were going to 2 or 3 schools (the number changed everytime we talked about it) and maybe a prison and maybe a hospital. On the last day of camp we asked where we were going to be staying and he says “the church is supposed to organize. I think we’re going to stay at the church. We might all have to share one room.” and walks off and leaves us thinking “why are we doing this again? Oh yea, God!”. Anyway, it turns out the church has a cute little house on their property which they usually rent out but was empty now so we got to use that and it was the quaintest, cutest house and I absolutely loved it. So we got beds and “hot showers” (those who were there will understand), but a las, no fast food – not even a KFC.
Turns out we were ministering at 3 different schools and a hospital and leading the church service on Wednesday night and doing something with the youth group on Thursday; all this in 3 days (Tuesday to Thursday). We broke into 2 groups of 3 people and did two schools on Tuesday and Wednesday (each group went to a school twice in the two days – so 7 classes each day = 14 classes of around 30 students each) and then the got back together for the third school on Thursday, which was my favorite school of the three. We got there and we were rushing and running late and feeling really bad but the welcome we got was so awesome. The school choir sang for us, as we walked up to the front the applause was amazing, and the whole school sings like a choir of angels. It was so beautiful.
On the wednesday we also went to the hospital and talked to people and visited the childrens ward and ended up in the malnutrition kids room (but we didn’t know then why the kids were there) where we were playing with these 3 kids that we all thought were a few months old and they turned out to be and 2 and 3 year olds, but they look smaller cos their bodies weren’t developing properly. Hectic! And we also prayed for some ladies who were suffering from different stuff, from one who had a bleeding problem (yea, like the lady in the bible…so cool), to tb, to burns, to birth complications, etc. The prison didn’t happen though, which I don’t think we would have been able to do anyway cos we were so drained.
Thursday we did some sight-seeing (quiver tree forest and giant’s playground) and then we met with the youth group and prayed for them and gave them some encouragement and just talked to them a bit. Then we loaded up our bags and headed out. It was actually kinda funny cos we didn’t know everyone was going to be there (they were having a memorial service for someone that night) so when we got out there were people out there waiting to say good bye to us and it was all awesomeness. And I got to see my new “grandmother” again, who has offered me a place to stay when (notice, when not if) I return to visit again. I think I’ll have to take her up on that offer.
Ok, let me get to the conclusion already:
My highlight of NamRock was definitely the accute presence of God. Never before have I felt the presence of God that strongly in my life. I think he just wanted to remind me just how real he was. And I think it was just a reminder that when we draw closer to God, he draws closer to us, and that when we seek him with all our hearts, he will be found. And a reminder that sometimes I need to get away from it all and just spend time with him – just me and him – even if I’m surrounded by 87 other people.
My highlight of Keetmanshoop is definitely the people: the people we met at the church who just so blessed and loved us overwhelmingly; the three or four girls that I met at the schools who would ask me what my culture was and I’d say tswana and they would go “I’m tswana too” and smile from ear to ear cos it was like we could relate cos we had that one thing in common; the guy who saw the bible come alive for the first time and become a love story about him and God; the little girl I met when we were doing the rounds at the hospital who told me that Jesus is her heavenly Father; and the people I lived with during those 3 days who sometimes drove me crazy but who just made the trip so much cooler and funner.
