George Clooney and Halle Berry
Posted on: August 16, 2011
no, this is not a celebrity gossip post. this is something i’ve been thinking about and thought i would share my thoughts.
“dudes don’t seem to fear getting older and more distinguished. is this the same with ladies? ladies seem to want to be younger.” – showtibzlove, twitter
i’ve had this conversation with my friends before, and we were saying how guys get hotter with age and rattling off name after name after name, but then couldn’t think of girls who got hotter with age – we could think of girls who were always hot and remained hot with age, but none that got hotter with age. the problem is, guys grow older and become distinguished gentlemen. ladies grow older and become old ladies.
think Betty White vs Sean Connery. everyone thinks of Betty White as that old lady from [insert movie here]. they think she’s cool and all and everyone loves her, but you don’t hear guys going “i would!”; on the other hand, Sean Connery should also be called the old guy who used to be james bond, but he’s not. he IS james bond. and you don’t have to look very hard to find girls who…would. (also he has a that super hot accent *sigh*…sorry, lost focus for a second there.) an old single guy is an eligible bachelor (george clooney), a 40 year old single lady must have issues, why can’t she hold on to a man (halle berry). it’s the way the media/society portrays reality. it’s the lies we’ve bought into.
i think guys just naturally have higher self-esteem than girls. i’ve heard many comedians talk about how a guy will look in the mirror fully naked and think “hell’s yeah, brad pitt’s got nothing on this”, beer belly and all. (and as a side note, who decided brad pitt would be the bench mark…i’m totally not even a little bit attracted to brad pitt…anyway) and a girl will stand in front of the mirror and see all the flaws, see what she’s lacking, she all the stuff that needs to be fixed.
michael douglas married catherine zeta jones. he is obviously way older than her. but no fuss was made. he was “the man” for getting catherine.
demi moore married ashton kutcher. she is obviously way older than her. a huge fuss was made. why can’t she get a guy her age. such a cougar. what’s wrong with her.
a guy looks forward to getting older cause he thinks he’s going to become sean connery (james bond), michael douglas (become wealthy and marry a hot younger wife), george clooney (suave, distinguished gentlemen, eligible bachelor), etc the list goes on.
a girl fears getting older cause she thinks she’s going to become halle berry (hot, but old and alone), demi moore (hot, but can’t find a guy and have to settle for a younger man and have her every move questioned), betty white (old and forgotten), joan rivers (no comment necessary) etc. [and i'm not saying that is true of these ladies: halle isn't necesarily alone - in fact she isn't, last time i checked she had a hot male-model boyfriend; demi didn't necessarily "settle" for a younger man (she didn't need to settle, she had bruce freakin' willis); and betty is freaken awesome and cool and is definitely not forgotten, but there are certain stereotypes that are put on women as they age.]
so maybe it comes down to what we focus on: the good stuff, the lies society tells us, or the flaws that need fixing.
growing old…er…

yesterday was my birthday…actually today as i’m writing this the day before it goes up.
there’s been a lot of talk about dating in my circles lately, and it has left me feeling old and thinking “why the hell am i still single? i should be married with kids already? i’m gonna end up alone in my house with 17 cats…and i’m allergic to cats! fml!”
today (4th) i got a plethora (i think we can all agree that that is an awesome word) of fb wall posts, sms’s, calls, bbm’s, tweets, emails, dm’s, inboxes, whatsapp’s, etc wishing me a happy birthday. and i thought, what the hell, i’m good. i’m loved. what more could you want.
my name is tsholofelo mpuru and i’m forever-single but not alone. i am loved. and i love my life.
happy 27th bday, me.
i have a crush on you…[2]

ok, didn’t think this was gonna be a series, but hey -> real life woman crush 2 (part 1 can be found here)
i’ve only met this lady in person once as well. seems to be a trend. i was at a networking event (27dinner) and, as usual, was feeling like a little kid trying to act like a grown up. she approached me and greeted me and made me feel all welcome. i then started following her on twitter and subscribed to her blog’s rss feed and i haven’t looked back since. in fact she was one of the very first people i followed when i joined twitter.
if you are from SA and consider yourself a geek i’m sure you have come across the name Maximillian Kaizen, yes? The thing about Max is she’s a genuinely nice person, on- and offline. She’s a proud geek, and she makes others proud to call themselves geeks. As her blog says, “Smart is the new Sexy!”
She’s also one of those people who seem to take life as it comes and just live it with ease.
i’m twitter famous, y’all…

…but only at arisefest.
me: “hi, i’m tsholo”
other: “oh, tsholo from twitter?”
other: “hi tsholo”
me: “hiiiii, have we met?”
other: “no, but i heard your name over and over this weekend”
me: “oh…”
me: “hi, i’m tsholo”
other: “tsholo underscore m”
me: “uhm…yes”
other: “ha ha…my friend was telling me about you last night”
me: “oh…”
just some of the wonderful introductions from arisefest. ha ha…
so, i twitter a lot. and i “meet” people thru twitter. and this past week i finally got to meet some of them in real life. it was kinda surreal having people go “hey, i follow you on twitter”. i’ve done that to people before but i’ve never had it done to me. some people started following me last year during arisefest cos they couldn’t be there and so they followed my stream to check out what’s happening at the fest, so they came and introduced themselves this year. so weird.
then there were some who would come up to me in the merch tent and ask me stuff about versus the wolf because Brett (who was mc’ing) told everyone i was a fan; or asking me the most random things about bands just cos i worked in the merch tent and they assumed i knew everything there was to know about said bands.
i especially liked the ones who came up to me and started talking to me like we were friends just because they’ve been hearing my name from everyone else. or when we were playing cards with some dudes we had just met and he said he wasn’t in the tent when Brett gave out my twitter handle but his friend told him about it later. weird. anyway, got some new followers on twitter after Brett gave out my handle, and hopefully i’ll get to meet them at the next arisefest
so thoughts on being famous: it’s great for 3 days – it was fun and got to meet lots of people thru it, but i really don’t get how real famous people do it. i would freak out if i constantly ran into random people who knew way too much stuff about me and i didn’t know them at all.
my absoulute favorite though has to be getting a shout out from Rash Ferguson and Nic Small of Versus The Wolf while Brett was interviewing them. and then Rash singing “i’m riding tsholo”…lolness! after that i had random people came and sat with me on the grass while listening to the acoustic stuff.
yay for being arisefest famous!

i know some of you are thinking “hey that’s John Ellis, ex-member of tree63 and former christian” – John Ellis
Start the conversation right when you answer the phone. All phones have caller ID now. I know you have my number programmed in, so there really is no need to start the conversation with a 1989 “Hello?” as though you’re playing a game of telephone lottery. – Tyler Stanton
That’s like being stuck on a plane in front of a centaur with poor social skills. Seriously, who does that?! Who plays a pan flute in an enclosed space where no one can get away. I mean, what if the sound of a pan flute reminds you of the time your Mom was gored to death by a unicorn? Insensitive. As far as I’m concerned, the pan flute guy *should* be ashamed. Oh, and all that other stuff you said was good. I liked it. – Jamie, comment on a scl post

a treeless john ellis

i first heard about tree63 in 2003. that was the year i decided to stop listening to “secular” music (for about the third time since becoming a christian) and my radio was constantly dialed to CCFM (local christian music station). i really dug their stuff. and i found out they sang the wimpy song aka treasure (lol). then i found out they were south african. so i bought a bunch of their cd’s. and they quickly surpassed the OC Supertones as my favorite band.
anyway, i remember trying to go to one of their gigs when they were playing in cape town but i couldn’t go and i was so bummed…i think this was in ’05…i think. fast-forward to 2009 and i hear they are playing at assembly. now 2009 was the year i sealed my “groupie” status by attending as many live music stuff as i could. and this time i had friends who were also into live music watching so they were willing to tag along to stuff. so i got a couple of friends and we went to see tree63…except when we got there, it wasn’t tree63 playing…it was John Ellis and friends. i was kinda bummed to be honest. and i got more bummed when he said that he was leaving tree63.
but then he started the show and my bummed-ness was replaced by “on my word, john ellis is a living legend”-ness. he played the old tree stuff and the whole of assembly sang along at the top of our lungs. and he has amazing charisma on stage. and he makes playing seem like fun…like he’s enjoying himself up there. and he’s always interacting with the crowd. and the whole show was soooo much fun! and that’s when i became a john ellis fan. plus i’ve heard from certain people who know him that he’s a really humble and down-to-earth guy – i don’t know if he know that he’s John Ellis! (i’ll stick to “certain people” so it doesn’t sound like i’m name-dropping or pointing out the fact that I KNOW PEOPLE WHO KNOW JOHN ELLIS!)
then i saw that the end of the year he was playing at arisefest along with one of my favorite south african bands new altum (who are now called versus the wolf and have since becoming my favorite south african band since the release of their latest cd “uncovering faces”) and i was like “i have to be there!” anyway, i’ve written about that experience already so i won’t go into it again.
2010 saw john ellis release his solo cd “come out fighting” surrounded by a whole lot of controversy over his christianity (that sentences sounded like it was copied out of some magazine or something…eeewww). i was half amped for the cd and half scared. i really loved tree63, and i loved john ellis singing tree63 songs, i wasn’t sure about this new controversial, political, revolutionist john ellis. then i found out he’ll be playing here in stellenbosch to promote the cd and i was like – awesome, i get to hear the songs before deciding whether to buy the cd or not.
so i go on facebook and invite people to come with me to see john ellis in stellies (woo hoo it’s gonna be a vibe, come join me) and then the next day i find out that irvine will be supporting him on the cape town shows and i’m like “hells yeah that is happening!” cause i figure even if i don’t like john’s new stuff at least i get to hear irvine…again…for the second time in one week [side note: i also went to see them on tuesday (the 9th) doing an accoustic set with gravity wins again (gravity's back woo hoo!)] and they absolutely rocked. i think i love irvine more and more with every listen…yep, i definitely do!
anyway, so this past saturday (13th) i went to the purple turtle in cape town to check out john ellis’ new stuff – and mind = blown! i love the new stuff. it’s political and controvertial and jesus. feed the hungry, clothe the naked, water the thirsty, get off your fat ass and do something, “we did not fight in the revolution so that we can sit back and feed our already too large asses and go yes sir mr malema sir while watching the rich get richer and poor get poorer”, aluta continua kinda stuff. so now i seriously want that cd. i might have gone a little overboard with tweets while he was playing…i even had someone asking me where to get his cd…i should probably leave that stuff to him and his promoters.
and now i’m thinking about going to his Q&A Workshop for musicians and guitarists happening this tuesday (the 16th) – although i’m neither a musician or a guitarist (owning a guitar and teaching yourself a few songs doesn’t make you a guitarist just as singing in the worship team at church doesn’t make you a musician)…i just wanna pick his brain on the stuff he’s going through and dealing with and stuff – so maybe not the right time/place.
and i’m also thinking about going to see him again this saturday (20th) when he plays in stellies.
oh my flip, that man is a legend! check out his new stuff at http://www.johnellis.co.za
[update: i did not go the Q&A session...quite bummed...but now i'm very keen for the 20th]

Q: Is this a Christian film?
A: Sort of. Steve, Ben and I are all Christians. Most of the principal cast are not Christians. The theme of the movie is about a kid who is ashamed of his faith, both for selfish reasons and for very good reasons. That said, it does not have a “christian” message, as much as it tells a story. The film is not trying to convert anybody to anything, so in that sense it is not an evangelical film.

Luda did a song with Bieber. They’re friends. Maybe they do another song together. They’re sitting in the studio, Justin is drinking a diet Coke, Luda is sippin’ on Yak. They start talking about the pressures of the industry. Luda says it’s hard to maintain his dirty south street cred while doing appearances on Martha Stewart. Justin shares the gospel. Ten minutes later? Luda is doing a project with NeedtoBreathe. This is going to happen. – Jon Acuff on Justin Bieber being Christian
